I have a Garmin GPS so I import the KML / KMZ file into base camp and download them to my GPS. Here's an example custom map I made for a friend going on a few day Keweenaw trip. Then I can open the google map on my phone and use it for navigating when in the truck and also export all the waypoints to a KML or KMZ file which can be imported into a GPS. I pull out all the places of interest and load them to the google map. I also use the map and satellite layers in google maps frequently to plan trips that involve driving because google earth doesn't do everything google maps does. This is especially helpful if the most current image is from September when tree canopy cover is heavy - often there is an April/May image that will show trees with no leaves and rivers in runoff stage which can be helpful for identifying rapids and deeper pools. You can even 'go back in time' and look at older imagery. For research purposes I use Google Earth. ![]()
